A letter to Adobe

Originally this is made in winter 2001 - and last small upgrade is from summer 2010

When PhotoShop 6 came I expected that many bugs and clear problems were fixed but no. There were many real improvements but most of the old problems remained.

When Phoshop 7 came i waited to see ewen the worst broblems solved, but NO !!!

And what do you think happend with Photosahop CS 8.0 ?

And what do you think happened with Photoshop CS2 9.0 and CS3 10.0 beta

And versio 11 ?

And version 12 (CS5) ????

 

  1. Perspective correction with the new crop tools does not work properly at all. Where is the information about what you must do when the program returns an error? Why the picture measures do not remain the same when you use perspective option? lOOK HOW THIS WAS DONE IN PHOTO RETUCH PRO

    Now you are forced to use the old fashioned method: "Layer-0 - Canvas size - Free Transform - Flatten image". Even though this method is often needed and actually quite easy to accomplish, very few users are familiar with it.

    Not much better in CS 8.0 ! Not much better in 9.0 and 10.0 ! Not much better in 12.0 ! - not even with the new tools for that

  2. Brush Dynamics -small icon picture in option bar does not give users any signs if it is on. You can hide many problems there. If you use dynamics it must very clearly, preferably with red colored indicator, inform user that some settings are on.

  3. Color management. It now works much better than in version 5.5, but why is it still so hidden? There are no options to find ICC- or ICM -profile filenames or use any file management for the profiles.
    LOOK HOW IT IS DONE IN EFI COLORWISE PROTOOLS.

    We must have the possibility to delete profiles and open profiles also in other folders than the new Win2000 default folder. Why is the new folder located in such a strange place c:\winnt\system32\spool\drivers\colors?

    Not much better in CS 8.0 ! Not much better in 9.0 and 10.0 ! Not much better in 12.0 !

  4. Open window must remember where you last time opened a file and the save window on its turn, must remember the place you last saved a picture. It works in MAC =S 9 but not in Windows.

    Best solution for both environments is to have an icon in Open and Save windows where you select either the last used place to open or save a file. In Windows you have forgotten to put favorites button in open dialog, it exists in save dialog. It works quite well.

  5. Mode CMYK command does not inform user about what it is doing. You can easily accidentally make wrong CMYK conversion.

  6. To rotate picture CW and CCW there must be simple keyboard shortcuts; we use F3 and Shift F3. Formerly it was quite seldom used but now the Digital cameras have changed the situation so you need rotation very often.

    This is a little better in Photoshop 7.0

  7. When reducing pixel resolution the picture jumps unnecessarily in a very small scale on screen. It must automatically jump to 100% if it fits on screen and 50% or 25 % if it does not fit in 100%.

  8. When you use Crop tools options to give picture precise measures you absolutely need an icon to change from portrait to landscape, now you must write new numbers when you go from 15*10 to 10*15 picture

  9. When you enlarge the picture so it does not fit the window you cannot go precisely to the picture edges. We need an option to have on about 10 pixels spare screen to work with.

  10. You still cannot use Ctrl - ˝ (the leftmost key in up row on national keyboard) to come back from channels where you go just pressing Ctrl 1, 2, 3 or 4. It works if you change you keyboard in English mode.

  11. In history window the original first snapshot, or any snapshot, must not scroll out of sight when history states increase, only the normal states should scroll.

  13. Reset palette location must have the opportunity to have you own palette combinations, for instance one for single screen working and other for double screen working, and factory defaults only as one option.

  14. Status bar is very antique; who really reads those help texts there. We urgently need to see Document size, Scratch Size and Current profile all the time and even those seldom used Timing, efficiency and Current tool.

    We should have blinking warnings when the Scratch Size and efficiency need attention.

    These work in Info palette now ! But no warnings

  15. The indication of Quick Mask uses if too hard to find. We must have there too that colored or optionally blinking sign when we are in Quick Mask mode. The color of indicator should of course be the same color currently used by Quick Mask.

  16. Quick Mask default is to show the mask not the selected area – they should be reversed, most users need selected area as default.

  18. There is much confusion in info numbers when you use Adjustment Layers. You must have option to read numbers from the picture you see not the layer underlying contents – not easy to solve so that it is clear to users.

  19. Automatic indication of the brightest and darkest points in picture is largely used in many scanning programs, why not in PhotoShop.

  20. We need an automatic working routine to put copyright and constant photographer and company info into the File Info. Always when you scan, otherwise create new or even open picture without info it must go there automatically. Same manner as adding working profile now.

  21. With Windows2000 and Mac9 you must wait when the system reads and makes thumbnail information. If you have a folder with dozen of two hundred megabyte pictures this comes really a pain.

    22. With PhotoShop Adobe should offer a screen saver based service that makes Windows, Mac and PhotoShop thumbnails ready for every picture found in whole active system, local hard drives and active net connections.

  22. To give proper amount of memory for PhotoShop in MAC OS is terrible, you too often find you are working with wrong size of PhotoShop.

    MAC OS-X is great - no broblem any more

    23. But why not an option than gives you easy selections every time you open PhotoShop – one for many programs open for net page work, one for ordinary use and one for really big pictures. PhotoShop the only active program and all possible done for work with several hundred megabyte big pictures.

  23. Hand tool still cannot move picture as a whole unit. We really need to move picture on screen, even if it is on gray background and fits the screen.

  24. Adobe Gamma is not a good program at all – its Wizard in MAC OS is very confusing and easily leads in wrong decisions. Rethink the whole screen calibration procedure, please.

  25. Extract and Liquify -parts does not use same logic in brush size than the other PhotoShop, and they do not understand how to work with two screen environments.

  26. Close all -command is in very strange place; it should automatically be where the normal close command is.

  28. In save as window there is no indicator at all if there is a clipping path made – very unpleasant surprise when you place a picture to Indesign or other program and find it has or not has the clipping path as intended.

  29. In save windows there is nonstandard way to tell (or not to tell) what file types are possible to use – they just don’t show in list at all. The not possible file types should be seen as grayed out. (works ok in MAC but not in PC)

  30. It is not nice that PhotoShop does not tell in save dialog if there is file info in picture and that the info disappear for instance when you save as GIF.

  32. We must have color sum % as a fifth row on CMYK info. Many users now create two nearby measuring points to have both the Sum % (Total Ink) and CMYK %

    With RGB it is the same problem with the grayscale % or preferably HRB´s B rate as the forth row. Grayscale % depends confusingly on Grayscale gamma setting and its default is different on PS 6 than PS 5 or 5.5.

  34. Unsharp mask needs complete rethinking. It needs an easy keyboard shortcut, we use F4. If should locate in somewhere else then in filters. It needs predefined suggestions and automation for different picture sizes and uses.

    And it needs option to have it darken or lighten and preserve dark area. And warn if picture has JPG blocs and you cannot use usual amounts of USM. Many scanning programs have much more advanced and still easier to use USM. But it is very important to tell users not to sharpen in scanners.

  35. Why is there not on option to move single selected point with keyboard in crop and free transform as in path tools.

  38. There is another bug in national keyboard, when you write text you often need Alt-CTRL-0 shortcut to go 100%. It works but it simultaneously creates on extra } –mark on text.

  39. There is a fine Preserve Luminosity option in Color Balance, why there is not such option in Curves and other tools, one up others down, easy option.

  41. When you create a layer mask the Layer Brush should be locked automatically. It is too easy to paint picture when you intended to paint mask. You can always remove the lock when you really need paint the layer.

  42. It is not nice that the clipping layer path indicating line is so clearly visible, it should be seen only when it is in editable state. Ctrl-H still shows and hides it properly, just the default unhide is wrong.

  43. Curves are the most important tools of all in PhotoShop but still in infant state. Many scanning programs have curves where user sees colored curves for each channel, all channels together, you can move two curves together, and you can have clever highlight, midtones, shadows, contrast, brightness sliders etc.

    Curves should be used in CMYK State even the picture is still in RGB -state. Compare to Silverfast scanning program.

  46. Clone (Stamp) Tool has changed its method from PS4 to PS 5, old method has its advantages, why not an option to choose the old fashion way if you prefer it

  47. It is fine that Adobe Gamma is not any more in PhotoShop but as a part of OS, but is it too much to ask that PhotoShop shows in Color Setting what is going on in OS color management side - only to see the current monitor settings not to change them.

  48. Stupid solution you have ended with Open Recent – too many times you press the mouse just to see that the file you are looking for is not there any more, the old method to show recent files immediately in file menu was much better.

  49. Print option is good but needs improving. We need only one menu option for printing and in print option we need the selections that now are in page setup.

    And the print option does not show the nonprinting area on paper there has always been shown in pressing mouse from the statusbar under. Print option must tell how much does not print in each side and is the picture in center of printable area or the whole paper?

  50. Image size window should contain also Canvas Size and Fit Image possibilities; their selection menus are now spread too far away.

  51. There is some too complicated in dragging layers up and down, it is very difficult even impossible to put a layer on top of all layers. The layers should make room for the layer you are dragging.

  52. There is no keyboard shortcut for Color Range and you too easily forget to use it. There should be a "shortcut" to use it straight from all adjustment layer tools

  53. Filters. Users own hierarchy to put them. So much to say about most of filters. Most important option is to automatically use duplicate layer when you start a filter. Preview in different blending modes, invert, and different opacities.

  54. There are no options for two (or even more) monitors. Still PhotoShop can be qualified as a good program only when you have two or more monitors. Selection for program background in one monitor or two, tools staying in other, selection which tool behave how in two monitor setup, which windows open in which monitor etc.

  55. File info is not on the level of new digital cameras. The info digicamera files include must be found in file info. User must clearly see if there is or is not an info or copyright. The ã -mark now seen in different places is too modest. And you absolutely must see in save command if there is info or not.

  58. Brushes. The keys to select smaller or larger brush do not work always very well. There should be clearer way to see the size and shape of new brush as long as the shortcut key is pressed down.

    This is a little better in Photoshop 7.0 - BUT WHY SO GLUMSY - dont you ever look how things are done in your competitors - copy the ideas on brush handling from any other paint program - Photoshop 7 is still the worst program to handle Brushes

  59. Info window should contain small blocks of colors before and after. Compare again to silverfast scanning programs. The info window should also be an integral part of adjustment tools. To make and clear metering points there should be icons in tools. And hide icon too.

  60. MAC keyboard sequence for Windows too. The new Win keyboard have the possibility to make the Window-key as Alt and the Alt as another Cntrl (command-apple) then the far better MAC keyboard situation is for PC users too. Good for all programs if users use both environments.

  61. Fade. Too complicated to press Shift-Ctrl-F to Fade. Fade is so important part on fast and easy working that it should have faster and easier shortcut like F2. And it should have small icon to put automatically on in option bar of some tools and windows.

  62. Context -menus are real good thing but need much improving. In text mode we need apply and Cancel texts, as it was in version 5. And there is no context menu in PhotoShop's gray background where you can double-click (in Windows only) the open command. There should be open, open recent, close all, tools preferences, etc.

  63. Dpi. Even though all other settings are national and centigrade we must keep "locked" the ppi settings not to change then in dpcm. Too often we mistakenly select 300 dpcm when we mean 300 ppi.

  64. Hue Saturation -tool is a very important and useful tool. It needs improvement in showing and selecting the active color, option to show the selected color same way as in selective color tools.   67. The layer window's context menus are great but too confusing, some colored hints about what is going to happen when you press where is really needed, even for advanced users.

  68. Help text is good but it is not necessary to dim them down automatically at all. They disappear naturally when you do something else – or just move mouse away. When you finally get the tools docked and organized well, which is first time really possible in PhotoShop, and for my point of view the most pleasant news in PS 6.0 – they should not get so easily moved, some kind of locking for them The area between docked tools windows is too small – 4 pixels more please.

When for instance in Brushes options there is a choice to Reset Tools, a normal user assumes that the brushes are reset, there reset should also be done in same place, now its hidden elsewhere.   78. In MAC the Ctrl mouse context menu does not exist in pictures upper column – as in PC, it is a great shortcut

  82. Statusbar should me stickier, it should not disappear at all in two normal window states, it goes nicely and automatically out of sight with full screen preview. There is much to improve in Statusbar as mentioned in many of my points here.

  83. In Windows 2000 you can finally get the more visible cursor by OS and pressing Alt any time you want to the big cursor. But what can we do in MAC OS. And where is the Windows cursor behavior documented?

  84. Hand and magnifies icons should be even get out of tools. Better if user can change them behave one click does 100% and fit in windows and returns the active tool - only double click really activates the tools.   85. 16 bit is ok, but why no tools use 16 bit sliders of info numbers

    Masking with adjustment layers in 16 bit mode is essential, you cannot get much benefit of 16 bit unless it is easy to have selected areas with it. And if a picture is accidentally in 16 bit there should be clear warning about 16 bit when you open file, change to 16 bit or save in 16 bit. So much confusion happens when amateurs scan in 16 bit "to get better pictures!"

  86. Font selection is antique. We must have different possibilities to see real font beforehand - one like now, the other like in Freehand, the other like in Microsoft programs.

    And most important we need decent font managing from programs without ATM or ATM Deluxe. Users must have possibilities to put fonts in users own hierarchical structure. ATM must be integral part of OS, and must work exactly same in MAC and PC - with same font files.

    No different TrueType or Type1 fonts, no different MAC or PC fonts, only on file for one font. Real font name in font file. Not much asked for computers of year 2000! 2007!

    Open Type is coming - but why so late and still slowly

  87. Info window is so often used with Curves and other tools and it is fine it can be activated with F8, but we need also icons in tools to activate it

  89. 3D- transform is really primitive - real 3D properties are needed in PhotoShop

  90. Morph tools. The path tools need extensions that change the path so that the hole pictures morphs respectively.

    Not much better in CS 8.0 ! You did it partly in CS 8.0 - ! You did it IN 12 !!!

  91. Vector based layers and text does not now show on screen really vektorized, it looks pixelized despite it prints as vectors. We want to see real vector output as we see for instance when se save a PhotoShop picture as PDF and look it with Acrobat reader.

    Not much better in CS 8.0 ! Not much better in 9.0 and 10.0 ! TERRIBLE STILL IN 12 !!

  92. Better preview for printing. It is not enough to have right ICC and ICM -profiles. We need also the old-fashioned "Knoll" type sliders to make the screen look more as the printed output - mostly because now there is so many different papers and inks for inkjets. The screen should even simulate the paper structure.

  97. Good picture archiving and viewing program in PhotoShop. Now we must buy excellent Thumbs Plus program to work with PhotoShop. Some prefer ACDC and some even use the terrible Photostation.

    This is a little better in Photoshop 7.0
    Much better in CS 8.0 and Bridge in 10 is almost what we need

  98. For pure scanning or newspaper work even the version 5 is too complicated and large and still missing so many essentials. Further 8.0 should be modular so that you can start different instances of PhotoShop for laptops, for scanning, for picture archiving, for basic picture handling, for graphic, for web etc,

All the above was originally written in ancient times - now I have another almost hundred new points to complain about Photoshop and Bridge and Lightroom - still the only choice in market to really work with Photographs.

Is it the lack of competition and monopoly situation that makes Adobe so ...
